SUMMARY:Schuylkill Acts & Impacts 2019
DESCRIPTION:What is Schuylkill Acts & Impacts?\nSchuylkill Acts & Impacts is a week-long service-learning program that will be offered to a team of fifteen high school students from communities within the Schuylkill River Watershed. \nThis expedition will involve a physical journey (by kayak and van) along the 120-mile Schuylkill River from its headwaters in the anthracite coal lands of Schuylkill County to its confluence with the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Team leaders from Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center and the Schuylkill Headwaters Association will guide students downriver\, illustrating an array of issues impacting water quality in the Schuylkill River through guided tours\, programming\, and applied service work designed to highlight issues in the watershed and explore hands-on solutions to these problems. \nIn partnership with Stroud Water Research Center\, participants will be conducting water sampling throughout the week\, and analyzing and interpreting water quality. \nApplications must be submitted no later than 4:00pm on Friday\, March 22\, 2019!\nDownload FAQ and Application \nLearn more about Schuylkill Acts & Impacts or help support this year’s program!

SUMMARY:Points of View Speaker Series: City Water\, City Life
DESCRIPTION:In City Water\, City Life\, historian and author Carl Smith explores the development of the first successful waterworks systems in Philadelphia\, Boston\, and Chicago between the 1790s and the 1860s. Smith shows how the discussion\, design\, and use of waterworks reveal how Americans framed their conceptions of urban democracy and how they understood the natural and the built environment\, individual health and the well-being of society\, and the qualities of time and history. Smith is the Franklyn Bliss Snyder Professor of English & American Studies at Northwestern University. \nCost: $15 (free for PAFA members)
