The fun continues with take-home books and kits full of water-themed activities to do in your neighborhood. \nDates: July 8\, 15\, 22\, 29\, rain or shine\nTime: 10am- 12noon (meet across from the Fountain of the Sea Horses at 10 am) \nOptional round-trip (school) bus transportation will be provided for those traveling from the adjacent Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Bus departs at 9:30 am outside Mander Playground (33rd & Diamond Streets)\, and leaves from the Fairmount Water Works at 12noon. \nThis free program is for families with children 2-8 years old. All siblings welcome. \nRegistration required.

DESCRIPTION:Water is part of everything we eat\, drink\, and use. Your traditional Thanksgiving recipes\, like one for pumpkin pie\, calls for little to no cups of water\, but from the time the pumpkin starts growing in the pumpkin patch to the moment it reaches your dinner table the pie you consumed uses almost  234 gallons of water to make. If a pie uses that much water\, to make\, then how much water does it take to create the feast that we indulge in on Thanksgiving Day? \nJoin us at the Fairmount Water Works for our Thanksgiving holiday pop-up activity Friday November 24 and Saturday November 25 from 11 am to 2 pm. All visitors are invited to discover the incredible amounts of water that it takes for our holiday meal staples to reach the Thanksgiving table. Visitors will have the opportunity to create a plate with their own holiday meal favorites and calculate the “water footprint” of their individual feast.

Children aged 12-18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.\nMeet at Lloyd Hall Recreation Center at 10am\n \nHave you ever been curious about the 19th century boathouses lining the Schuylkill River? Together these historic buildings form the iconic Boathouse Row. Each rowing club is a member of the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia\, the oldest amateur athletic governing body in America. Join us on a walk from Lloyd Hall to 12 Boathouse Row\, home to Penn Athletic Club\, for an inside tour of the building and to learn about the sport of rowing. Learn how Fairmount Water Work’s innovative technology and construction of Fairmount Dam set the stage for this very important recreation area. \nAt Fairmount Water Works\, we will enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and a curator-led tour of the art exhibit “Take Me to the River”.  One of the featured artists will discuss his special connection to the river through his artwork and demonstrate some of his most effective art techniques.\nLearn about Philadelphia City Rowing\, a program that is open to middle and high school students in the School District of Philadelphia\, and where to get more information for interested students. \nProgram is free\, but pre-registration is required. We will be offering tours on the hour from 11 am to 2 pm and we will have a fun\, hands-on\, pop-up activity from 11 am – 3 pm in our LAB: \nFish: Playing it Cool around the Holidays! \nDo you wonder what happens in the Schuylkill river in the winter?  What do the fish and other animals do when the water gets cold? Learn about the cold-blooded residents of the Schuylkill river and how they survive the winter.  You will also discover a physical difference between hot and cold water and how that can affect fish in the winter. Be creative and make a fish ornament to take home!

SUMMARY:Trash Free Waters Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Come view a selection of entries from the 2023 Trash Free Waters Art Contest\, organized by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. \nArtists from across the Delaware Estuary region were asked to create a piece of artwork related to the theme of Trash Free Waters. Artwork could use any medium\, but had to be created on a provided 12″ by 9″ canvas. The goal of the art contest was to bring awareness to the problem of aquatic trash and highlight the ways people can help be part of the solution. \nWinners were chosen by public vote at the 2023 Delaware River Festival\, held at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia on September 9th. \nWinning artwork will be turned into advertisements to help share the message of the importance of keeping out local waterways trash free! \nView during Interpretive Center hours until early April 2024: Wednesday – Saturday: 10am-5pm
