Geocaching at the Fairmount Water Works!

Fairmount Water Works is getting into geocaching just in time for Spring!

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices such as a smart phone. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. (See Geocaching 101 for all the information you need to get started.)

In honor of the 200th anniversary of the 19th century Schuylkill navigation system of dams and canals, and of the historic Fairmount Water Works itself, we launched the Schuylkill Dam Series on March 21. Each cache is a water bottle (what else) filled with native Schuylkill River animals, such as the Channel Catfish, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Smallmouth Bass, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, and Green Frog. Experienced geocachers are alerted on their cell phones when a new cache is activated. We’re happy to report that all five caches had “FTF” (First To Find) posted within an hour of activation, and our Travel Bug is on its way around the watershed!

Here are our five cache listings. If you look for any of them, please let us know in your “Found It” or “Didn’t Find It” log that you heard about it directly from us. Even if you don’t go geocaching, you may enjoy reading our cache pages for some of the history of each dam site.
